Blockchain & Art: Beyond NFTs

Share it on

When NFTs exploded onto the scene in 2021, the headlines were everywhere—million-dollar JPEGs, digital collectibles, and record-breaking auctions. But while the hype has faded a bit, blockchain technology’s impact on the art world is only just beginning. It’s not just about selling digital art; it’s about fundamentally rethinking how ownership, royalties, and community function in the creative space.

At the heart of this transformation are smart contracts—self-executing agreements coded onto the blockchain. For artists, this means automatic royalties every time their work is resold, ensuring ongoing recognition and income. No more relying on the goodwill of future sellers or chasing down payments; the system takes care of it, transparently and instantly. This is a game-changer for artists who have traditionally struggled to benefit from the secondary market.

But blockchain’s potential goes even further. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are popping up, where groups of collectors and creators make decisions together about exhibitions, funding, and acquisitions. It’s community-driven curation, giving artists and fans a bigger voice in how art is shared and experienced.

Some artists are leveraging blockchain for preservation and provenance, embedding detailed metadata that can’t be lost or altered. This means collectors can always verify a piece’s history, and artists can safeguard their legacy. Others are experimenting with fractional ownership, where multiple people share rights to a single artwork—democratizing access to high-value pieces and inviting more people into the world of collecting.

Of course, there are still hurdles: environmental concerns around certain blockchains, speculation that can overshadow creativity, and legal questions that need sorting out. But the potential is real. Artists like Olive Allen are using NFTs and DAOs to build communities and support fellow creatives. Osinachi leverages blockchain to share vibrant digital works and empower artists in Africa. Serwah Attafuah combines cyber-surrealism with blockchain to reach global audiences.

Beyond the noise, blockchain holds a radical promise: a more transparent, fair, and accessible art world for everyone.
